Components of Google SketchUp
6th August, 2010
In Google SketchUp, you can create 3-D models of almost anything. With the help of video tutorials and an experienced user community, it takes minutes to get started. You can create a model of your city or redecorate your home. Models can be generated from scratch or downloaded from other users. As of July 2010, Google SketchUp has been updated from version 6 to 7, but the concept remains the same.
Push/Pull
The push/pull feature allows you to quickly alter your model from 2D to 3D and vice versa. Pull a flat surface to stretch it out by dragging your mouse button. You can draw the outline of an object, such as a staircase, and "push" it to make it three-dimensional.
Edges and Faces
Every model is composed of edges (straight lines) and faces (flat 2D shape). The tools in SketchUp are used to create these shapes into realistic images.
Accurate Measurements
Everything created in SketchUp is outlined with precise dimensions. It is designed to allow you to work quickly but accurately. Create a scaled printout of the model with detailed measurements, or export them into graphic design applications, such as 3DS MAX and AutoCAD.
Sections
The sections component temporarily removes parts of the design so you can look inside. This feature is useful for creating floor plans or to simply allow for a better view. The sections can be rotated, moved and animated using the "Scenes" option.
Import/Export Images
This component of Google SketchUp gives you the convenience of saving to many different image types. These include: TIFF, PNG, JPEG AND PDF. The Pro version allows additional formats such as OBJ, DXF and DWG, giving you the option to view your creations in other 3D programs.
First-Person View: There is a camera built into the software that lets you "get inside" your model. Look around and walk in first-person view using your virtual head. Climb stairs and walk down ramps similar to real life
